Ever wondered what you can do with leftover batting?

Here is one idea for you. Simply use Elmers Glue and attach small pieces of it on to plastic hangers. Be sure you let them dry overnight before you try and hang anything on them!

To celebrate 2012 I'm starting off by posting a new quilt.
This is done with cheese cloth and glue. Many years ago I drew a horse on black paper with a piece of chalk. When I saw this technique on Quilting Arts I wondered whether it would work with my drawing. I'm thinking to name it Finally Free.

Art Quilt Group

On Saturday Dec 10th, I had our Art Quilt Group for lunch.
There were just two that were not able to attend. We have been meeting at the local quilt shop for probably 6-7 years now and have learned so much from each other as well as becoming good friends.

From front to back is Susie, Sarah, Linda, Jo Ann, Cindy and Ann. Everybody brought a dish and the food was delicious.

Finally finished my newest horse quilt. But what to name him? As I downloaded the picture it suddenly came to me.

I have been trying for some months to expand my Stained Glass technique, that I have been working in for several years now. Looking for someway to make my horses a little more abstract and whimsical. I did not change the technique very much, but I did use a very different color scheme . Already I am working on another quilt, this time of cats, three to be exact, and I am using turning under all the edges. Not much more work but it will give my quilts a much more finished appearance compaired to the raw edge I have been using. Would love your feedback as to whether you like the old look or the new one.

I have never met Sweety, but I know her intimately.
I made this quilt from a picture, as a gift from a father to a daughter, because she was getting along in years.

Sweety lived in Acworth, Ga with her owner Amanda Owens. She passed away on October 24th, 2011 and she was 14 years old.

As with any animal that you love and care for she will be
greatly missed. Our thoughts are with you Amanda.

This is my entry in the Bloggers Quilt Festival. Thank you Amy for doing this once again! Let me introduce you to Sprinkler. (cute name) ?
He is a Newfoundland. He started to be a red dog on a tourquoise background, but as you can see that didn't work out. I used the Stained Glass Applique technique, which is pretty much the technique I have used for the past several years. This technique consists of individual pieces with the background fabric showing between them. Actually, I have been teaching this technique for several years now, and also have an on-line class. NEW PIECES

Making quilts is a long process, and so sometimes I don't feel I have very much to show, and then all of a sudden, I have an overabundance of finished product.

So, today, I am just going to ramble on, and talk a little about the process. I don't know if it is the same for everybody, but when the creative process kicks in I have so many ideas that I don't know where to start. So, I begin to collect images, and do a lot of reading and looking and if I am true to myself, all that begins to filter thru and I will eventually settle on something that I just can't wait to get started on.

So, recently I have been trying to expand my concept and have tried several different techniques. I started out with a technique that I saw on Quilting Arts television program, that takes fabrics that probably will never be used in a quilt, sandwiches them on to the batting, and then quilts them, and from there she paints them. Pretty backwards to most quilters, but it works beautifully. In my next posting I will show you what I have done. Every one is different, and I have been in to using up what I have on hand for sometime now.

I started out by coming up with ideas for old tee shirts, and that went very well. I had a whole suitcase full of them, some pretty well worn, some way too big. So, I didn't have any qualms about cutting them up and putting then backtogether in a pleasing manner. Actually, I had a great time doing this and will continue with my quest to use them up, or if not pass them on to someone who will find something to do with them.

Then, I started experimenting with 3's. Smaller quilts in three's that I could attach together in an interesting manner. I will have something to show fairly shortly. I'm working on the bindings nowl

And lastly, I have made 4 horse quilts, and they have been very sucessful. I thought I was thru making horse quilts, but in my quest to produce something more abstract, I finally settled on another horse figure. The pattern is on my design wall and completely drawn, and is calling me every day to get started.

However, being an Aries, in my long life I have learned that I must attend to the quilt at hand before starting something new. Oh, it is ok to be quilting on one and working on another, but in this case I have 4 projects in the works, and I am not going to put any of them aside because I have learned too much in the process of each one to do that.

So, to get back to the point I was trying to make in the beginning. I have learned when I feel frustrated, and feel like I am stuck in a rut to just muddle thru the process, and sooner or later the answers will come if you just give in the process and trust your own instincts and let it happen.

Lunar Moth

This is made by Paige Hoogerheidi, and I was very impressed with how she brought this quilt together. She belongs to our Art Quilt group and so I have been watching this quilt progress. She started with the lunar moth which, then the leaves that all stand away from the background. The background is woven which really brought the piece together.

Friday evening I attended the Quilt Extravanga reception, and took a few pictures to share.

The first one of course is my Sprinkler quilt. He was hung in a wonderful spot that people could also view from the street.

The second quilt was made by a former student, and she
made if of her two dogs using the Stained Glass Applique technique. I am sorry, but now I can not remember her name but she did a wonderful job.

I finally have a new quilt to show. I showed it for the first time at the State Get-Away which was last Wednesday.
The breed of the dog is a Newfoundland and I named him Sprinkler. Why? I have been thinking that if I ever get another dog I would name him Sprinkler. Just think it is a cute name.

Truthfully, it started out as a red dog on a turquoise background, but that didn't work for me so I switched gears and went on my own gut instinct, and think it worked. I've learned over the years to just go with what feels right and I must say it almost is good advise.

BLAZING SUNSET

Blazing Sunset is also hanging in the show and is for sale also. It measures 55 3/4" x 39 3/4".

This quilt showed in a number of national quilt shows and also showed in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2003 I took a trip to Istanbul, where I was invited to teach a class and show my quilt in a local show.

This is Bagel, our Beagle. He came to live with us about a year after we were presented with Sally. He does not play with toys, but has a bone that he has had at least 4 years. Every day he hides his bone. Sometimes when I go to bed at night I find it under my pillow. Yet other times he will put it just in front of my husbands recliner. Quite the character. I made a quilt of him because he has such an expressive face. Not for sale, but just had to share.

The first one I did was of President John F. Kennedy.

The second quilt was made from a picture of an Afghan girl
that appeared on the front of National Geographic quite a long time ago.

It measures 37 1/2" x 54"

Both these quilts have hung in several major quilt shows.

Here is another of the quilts that will be shown at the Woodford County Library next month.

This is a quilt I made after taking a class with Diane Hire.
It is a very personal quilt, as under the plain yellow piece that looks like a pocket is a picture of me as a child. Inside one of the dangling pieces is a gadget that plays These are a Few of my Favorite Things, and on the hand at the top is a giant emerald button to signify my engagement and wedding.

At this point in my Quilting career I have decided to put prices on my quilts (at least some of them) and offer them for sale. I will be posting new pictures along with prices. This one is Not For Sale as it is too personal, but the one I posted earlier named Free at Last, is for sale at the price of $450.00.

Quilt Show

I have been trying to post these photo's for a while now, and it seems Blogger has had a problem. I'm so glad it is fixed.

Starting in June I am going to have a show at the Woodford County Library. In planning this I am going to be showing some pieces that were done some time ago. So, I thought it might be interesting to share this with the general public.

This is a piece I did after taking a class from Phil Beaver. It was done with fabric paint first, then I cut out butterfly
shapes from an old shower curtain and layed them on the wet fabric in the sunshine. When it was dry it left the butterfly shapes lighter than the background paint.

While quilting this piece I used a lot of Sulky shimmer threads plus seqins and iron on crystals.

Sally and Bagel

Let me intoduce you to my babies. The dark Beagle is named Bagel, and the brown and white one is named Sally.
They are always together, even when one has to visit the vet, I have to take them both.

Sadly, Sally has congestive heart desease, and it has progressed a lot this last year. She has had a good long life, as she will soon be 12 years old.

Barbaro Cake Jane Bull

Jane Bull is a lady that lives in Canada and took my Internet class.
When she finished with the class she made a Barbaro quilt from my pattern and that quilt was presented to her boss as a gift. At the time she told me she was going to retire after 34 years, at the end of April. Well, that date is almost upon her and so her fellow workers gave her a going away party and look what some bakery has made. I can't imaging how they did it but it is a very good likeness of the quilt she made. I hope it tasted as good as it looked! Makes me very proud.

This quilt actually made me dizzy while trying to figure out how she got the perspective.

I took a picture of this quilt because I saw another quilt that looked very much like this one last year. Although this quilt had sparkles added, so I'm not sure it is made by the same person.

This first quilt is my favorite of the show. Mostly because of the colors she used. Also, because the design is so simple and clean.

The second quilt is also made by Sherri Driver. I have never heard of her before, but from now on will keep my eyes open for new things from her.

IQA Quilt show in Cincinnati, Ohio

Blogger is finally up and running once again. I tried to post these pictures three times last week before I realized what the problem was.

So--- Our local guild hired a bus and 45 of us took the hour drive to Cincinnati from Lexington, Ky. Uneventful trip and in fact we got there a little before the show actually opened.
I have been to Houston a number of times, but never to
Chicago, where this show has been featured for the last few years. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was much larger than I had imagined, and very well put together. They also had started something new, which was an exhibition of juried photographs. I really enjoyed that part of the show.

So, when I go to see a show I usually take a quick trip thru the quilts, then hit the vendors, and then go back and take pictures of the quilts that for some reason struck my fancy.

The first one caught my eye because besides being painted it also had large areas, such as the sleeve and the turbin that were simply layed on and attached somehow.

The second quilt, which is a lovely landscape, but the the thing that intrigued me was the number of small pieces the maker had used.

I will be posting more pictures, but for now I don't have the time. SOON, I PROMISE.

SCRIBBLES FACE #2

Here is another famale face. I started this one first but I like to work on two things at the same time, so actually finished the second one first. (If that makes any sense)

It was done on poster board, the same size as the first one I posted. Now I will go back to doing shoes for a while and who knows where Scribbles will take me!

I'm also doing a tee shirt for a friend, and have orders for two more dragonflies all on fabric. So, I have my work cut out for me.

I will get back to drawing shoes, but I got this idea over the weekend and just had to give it a try. So much fun!

I used a technique called stippling to draw the face, and then sectioned off the rest of the picture and used the Scribbles technique. It is drawn on poster board which is 22" x 28".

I will be offering this piece for sale, but I want to frame it and so I have not decided how much to charge.

During class I'm always repeating BREATHE. Each position has a breath, but people get to concentrating on what their bodies are doing and they hold their breath. Once they learn to breathe the Yoga Breath all the way thru their practice, the benefits are far reaching.

This is my entry for the Blogger's Quilt Festival. Thanks Amy for doing this for us. It is a joy to see all the other quilts.

This is the 4th in a series of horse quilts which I had the honor of hanging at our main library during the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Ky. I named it Three Friends.

It is made with my Stained Glass Applique technique, but I attempted to stylize this piece. Perhaps I will play with that technique some more in the future. I thought I was finished with horse quilts, but when I went to see Secretariat a couple of weekends ago I think I have to make one more. That was a wonderful story and some of it was filmed in Lexington.

Finally, I have something finished.

This quilt is for my sister Marcia, and I made it from a picture that I found on her Facebook page. I haven't posted the whole quilt yet as I want it to be somewhat of a surprise when she actually receives it in the mail.

My sister is an animal lover. I think she has 4 or perhaps 5 dogs, plus various cats as well as she raises birds that she
sells. Anybody that gives of themselves that much is ok by me. I hope she will be very surprised by this gift!

Tee \shirt Cutting

As you know I have been playing with the idea of cutting up old Tee Shirts. I tried a number of techniques and this is one that I am pleased with, and wanted to share it with you. This white tee shirt was very old, very big but because of that I had room to cut and tie. I am kind of a stickler for fit, so not every old tee shirt will work. The other thing I found is that every tee shirt stretches differently. So, if you want to try this you will have to experiment a bit.
It is so much fun to take something that you thought you would never wear again and turn it into something current.

Before I started quilting, I loved to make clothes. In fact at one time I started my own company and sold my own designs. I also have a hard time getting rid of things that I haven't worn for a long time. So, what better than to think up an idea that will make that piece usable again.

Here is a perfect example. I have a number of these sleeveless tees. So, I simply slit it in the front and used a knit stitch to anchor the center cut.

One thing that must be remembered with any kind of knit is not to pull on it as it is being stitched, as it will stretch and ruffle the edge you are working on. You will also have to experiment, and find a stitch and thread tension that will work on your machine. Knits can be tricky. Be sure and use a needle that is desinated for knits .

I'm having fun with many new ideas and will share more later.

Well the time has finally come and my horse quilts are on exhibit at the downtown library. They will be there from now on thru the 31st of Oct.

The World Equestrian games are being held in Lexington, Ky this year and I was so pleased that the library choose my quilts to hang at this special time. I know this is my quilting blog, but I also love dogs as you can see from some of my quilts.

Anyway this last Sunday I went to a fundraiser for many of the humane societies in this area. It was soooo much fun to see other peoples animals and also to see those who were up for adooption. They had contests for the dogs. Like the ugliest, or the longest. They also had contests for dogs that love to perform with frizies. That was so much fun to watch.

This little lady just captured my heart and if I didn't already have two dogs I would have taken her home. However, they said her previous owner had given her up because they could no longer take care of her. She probably is about 12 years old and I wish I could remember her name. She just wanted someone to hold her . So, I just thought I would share her with all of you. She really touched my heart.

Butterfly Stencils

Some of you know already that I love Butterflies, but many do not know that I am a stencil addict. For quite a few years now I have been dying tee shirts and then stenciling on them.

So I thought I would share the very first tee shirt I made, and it is still one of my favorites.

Stencils can be so addictive and I have cut hundreds of them simply out of FREEZER PAPER. Yes I said freezer paper. Not nearly as expensive as using plastic templates. How many times are you going to use a stencil anyway? Perhaps several times, but let me tell you that a freezer paper template gets stronger with use.

So, on my next blog I am going to offer one of my Butterfly stencils to the 10th person who asks and also to the 20th. It will be absolutely free, all you have to do is ask.

So, ladies I am also going to advertise this on my Facebook site later in the day, so be quick. Along with the stencil I will also answer any questions you might have if you have never stenciled. Be careful, it is very addictive.

Creativity?

I finished my last two projects and they are hanging in a show for a month.

What now? I'm not sure, sooooooooooooo, I'm thinking it would be interesting to share each others techniques for getting the creative juices going. Please comment and perhaps we can help each other.

What do I do? I dig thru my binders of ideas, I look thru my photographs, I get on the computer and look at other peoples work, I think about options until my brain is so full of images that I dream about them. So, confusing------------ to many ideas. How am I going to decide which images I am actually going to use?

So, I get busy with something that I have already drawn a pattern for, and just dig in and start. I can alway keep the other images in my mind, while I am working on whatever I am working on.
I know that eventually, if I trust in the process it will become clear which direction I want for myself.

For me, it is a frustrating process and sometimes painful. But for those of us that are creative it is a necessary thing in order to activate the creative process. At least we don't have to go to the extreme of cutting off one of our ears.

I now have a facebook account. Actually, I have had one for some time, but I didn't really know what I was going to do on it. This is all new to me, but I am trying and I am actually learning little by little. So, come join me. I am also going to set up a business Facebook so I can post pictures of new quilts with patterns. It is called Serindipity, but at this point there is nothing on it.

I have a quilt showing at the AQS show that opened today in Knoxville. I went last year but could not get away this year. The quilt that is in the show is Mother's Love and if you go back sometime you can get a glimpse of it on this blog. It is a horse with her baby.

I finished my last horse quilt, and now I am going thru what I'm sure all of you have gone thru, trying to figure out what direction I want to take. So, I spend my time looking at pictures, and quilts that have won in other shows, also going thru binders of ideas that I have collected. It is painful. No other way to describe the feeling, and I am possessed, thinking about it a great deal of time. I have learned not to push it, and I will eventually get very excited over something new. Then the ideas will just come pouring out of me.

I have two new internet students that will be starting very soon. That is so much fun for me as I can teach anywhere in the world. Who would have thought that would be available in my lifetime.

This is the last in a series of horse quilts. (At least for the time being)

The name of the quilt is called FRIENDS.
Those of you who follow my work know that up to this date my quilts are very realistic.

I wanted to try something that was a little more stylized and this is the result.

It is made using the Stained Glass Applique technique but in this instance I did a whole lot of decorative quilting on each section.
It is going to be in a show called Quilts with a Kick that is held each year in Berea, Ky. which is a wonderful college town about 35minutes outside Lexington. Berea college is a free college, where students have to work to earn their tuition. There are also quite a few well known artists that live and work in the city.

I don't have a small pattern for this quilt, but I hope to do so in the future. In the mean time please click over to Serindipity 2 and take a look at the patterns I do have, and perhaps if you like the technique the Internet classes are always open.

Butterfly Wings

Here is my new piece that I talked about earlier. I'm really pleased with the end results. I named it Butterfly Wings. I guess you all know that I love butterflies, since I have made so many quilts and also offer a number of butterfly patterns.

This is an adaption from a book called Quilted Symphany by Gloria Loughman. I took some of her ideas but inlarged everything and used the Stained Glass Applique technique that I always work in.

I really enjoyed trying some of her techniques, but I must say that they are very time consuming. Luckily a lot of the individual pieces I was able to do the maching stitching on before it was put together and that made things easier. All in all it was worth the time and I learned a lot from her. I highly recommend purchasing the book.

Here is a new piece. Back in October I attended a workshop with Jane Sassaman, and this is the piece I designed. She has you take three shapes of your choice and make a design from there. I found it hard at first because I am used to making my own designs on paper first and then transfering them into a size that I want. This way you don't see your design until after you start cutting into fabric. A little nerve wracking at first!

I'm not sure I would have finished it, but I was the receipent of a scholarship thru the State organization KHQS, and along with that scholarship I wrote an article and have to give a presentation at the upcoming Get-Away this month.

In retrospect it was a very learning experience. Some of what I will use in future projects, and I really enjoyed getting to know Jane. She is a very warm and giving person.

I'm finally back in the swing once again, and will have some more new things to share in the next few weeks.

This quilt is named Mother's Love and is the latest in a series of horse quilts. I live in Lexington, Ky. and in late September and October we will be hosting the World Equestrian Games. I have made a number of quilts and they are going to be featured in the Main Gallery at our main library during the time that the games are going on. The technique is called Stained Glass Applique. I have been teaching the technique and also offer the class on the internet.

They win every year, and their work is a cut above. They are a couple, and make their home in France, I think!

This year there were a lot of quilts that were made by two people. I wish AQS would catch up with the times and make another catagory for people who want to do what they are the best at, and then farm out the quilting to someone that is really good at that, and especially when they pay someone else to quilt their piece. Not really fair to those of us who do both.

This quilt is truly amazing. If you look close you will lace all around the edges. I'm sorry but I didn't buy a book this year so I don't have the the quilt makers names. However, you can find that out by going to AQS website. As I was viewing the quilt, the maker was explaining how she got the lace on without the stitches showing on the back. She sewed on the binding, but before pulling it to the back she sewed down the lace and then pulled the binding to the back side and stitched it down by hand. By the way, the binding on the back was scalloped!

Paducah grand prize winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just came back from the Paducah quilt show, and wanted to share the winners with all of you. This quilt was amazing! Very dark with a lot of gold thread.

Paducah was not as crowded as it usually is. We arrived on Wednesday afternoon, but did not go to the show. We did our shopping first and went to the book sale as well as the Museum. Then very early the next day we went to the show. It was crowded but not as busy as it usually is. They had set up what they call a bubble, which is a big tent to house the vendors that are normally out by the swimming pool. It worked well, but was very disorientating. Once I got in, I had a hard time figuring out what I had seen and had not seen. Also, had a terrible time finding a way out. Perhaps they will correct that next year with some signs.

All in all it was a good trip and the weather was the best I remember. I will post more of the winners, but thought it would be better to show them one at a time.

STILL ALIVE

I know it's been some time since I posted anything.
I have been working diligently, and have my new horse quilt top ready to quilt. I also have a quilt that I have promised to quilt for a friend, so it is going to be a while before I can actually show something.

I also have been cleaning up and organizing my work studio, and that has taken a lot longer than I anticipated. I also have been working on a little sample piece from a book that I just fell in love.

So, I would like to recommend Gloria Loughman new book called Quilted Symphony. I have her first book and I bought it because I remember her wonderful quilt called Kimberly Mistique. It was a large quilt of Australian trees. I think I saw it at IQA show in Houston perhaps 6 years ago. She is a native of Australia, and really did a great job on this book. It is colorful and precisely written. If nothing else it will stimulate your imagination.

NOTHING NEW TO SHOW ?

I have been working diligently on a new horse quilt, but nothing I can show yet.

However, I have been teaching two internet students, both doing the same pattern, and they started within a week of each other.

I must say it is so much fun teaching over the internet. I feel like I have made a new friend with each student I work with.

I thought with this entry I would let you get to know another side of me by talking about another passion I have, and that is Yoga! I started practicing it many years ago, and would do it for a while, and then move on to something else. However, about 4 years ago after falling and breaking my pelvis, I decided to give it a try again and so enrolled in a seniors group. When I tell this story, I always say that Yoga gave me back my life. At first it was so hard for me to get down on the floor, but I worked very hard at it and slowly improved. I got so taken with it because it made me feel so good afterwards that I found some other classes and actually was doing yoga 5-6 times a week. Then one of my teachers ask if I would like to teach. I didn't hesitate for a moment. This was my chance to pay back to other people what Yoga had given to me.

If you are not familiar with Yoga, it will give you a burst of energy, but with a calmness and clarity of mind. Once you learn the correct way to breath and do the postures, you will gain strength and flexibility. When you are over a certain age the body just seems to get stiff and inflexible and balance becomes a problem. Yoga helps with all those problems.

If you are a person that has trouble sleeping, let me recommend a tried and true way to calm your mind and relax. Lie on your back with your hands beside palms up and your legs a little apart with your feet just relaxed. Let your imagination take you to a very pleasant place, like a warm beach, or a green meadow, or imaging that you are floating on a cloud.

Now, just start at the top of your head and just talk to yourself, willing each part of your body to relax. I'll bet before you get to your ankles that you will be asleep.

Now that you know my other passion, I will be happy to answer any questions in case you are thinking about giving Yoga a try. You can do it with a DVD or there are some television programs, or you can search out Yoga class at churches, or there many other places that offer classes. Some are for a very nominal fee, and others are as expensive at $15.00 a class.

I would love to hear your response after giving Yoga a try, so please write me and share.

Revamped Blog

For those of you who visit me regularly, you will be surprised to see that my blog has changed!
I ask my son who was home for a visit if he could set up a link between Serindipity and Serindipity 2. Well, he did that as well as a few other changes. I am so thrilled.

So, I am busy working on a new horse quilt, and also teaching two internet students the Stained Glass Applique technique. I've also taken on a project to quilt a friends top that passed away a few weeks ago. Her husband ask and I could hardly say no. Actually it is my pleasure to do that for him.

Just a note this morning because I have been feeling really guilty that I have not been doing any quilting lately.

Just needed to take a breather, and also to get caught up on some family projects.

I also have been working to separate out the quilts that have patterns for sale. So, because I do not have a whole lot of computer skills I decided to simply create another blog and post the patterns there. It is not finished but if you would like to take a look it is called Serindipity 2. I will continue to add other patterns and as new ones become available I will add those also. I also will be posting information on my Internet class called Stained Glass Applique, and that way everything will be in one place.

It has been a while since I posted anything. Mainly because I took a trip out to California to visit my family, and when I returned I launched into a couple of projects on my house, etc. Nothing to do with quilting, although I already have a complete pattern already transferred onto background fabric, just waiting to be started.

However, I guess that will have to wait until after Christmas because there has been no extra time and like many of you some things do take precedence over quilting. Not many, but a few!

While I have your attention, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have ordered the Remembering Barbaro pattern. I had no idea how popular he was going to be.

So, I will bake my Christmas cookies, and get the rest of my cards out in the mail Monday, or they won't get to their destinations in time, and I will report back to you shortly after Christmas.

Finally, finally for those of you who have been very patient with me, I have made a smaller version of the Barbaro quilt, and am now able to offer a pattern.

My quilt is 27" x 37". Of course the fabrics are somewhat different but the coloring is the same as the orginal. I flipped him, so when you look at the orginal he might look a little different.

Just before I went to California I took a workshop at Crestview Catholic Retreat Center in Danville, Ky.
The featured teacher was Jane Sassaman, who I have wanted to do a work shop with for many years. I was not dissapointed, and learned many new things. Plus the group was very diverse and the food was wonderful.

This is my newest favorite quilt, named Flights of Fancy which one of my followers suggested. This quilt is made with the Stained Glass Technique. It is actually going to be showing in the Pacific International Show which is starting on the 15th of Oct. Flights of Fancy always seems to create a stir whenever I show it, and part of the reason is the bright colors and the fact that it is so large.

STAINED GLASS APPLIQUE TECHNIQUE

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Use shades of color to create beautiful realistic applique. This technique can be used to make realistic landscapes, animals, flowers or people. You will use lots of different fabrics which lends itself to using up a lot of scraps. Simple enough that even a beginner can do the technique, but results lend themselves to the more advanced quilter also.

Biography
Sheril started sewing at a very early age, but upon moving to Lexington, Ky., she joined a Newcomers group and from there joined local quilting group. Sheril was immediately taken with the process, but soon learned she did not want to stick with traditional patterns. So, she began to experiment and has continued to do so. Throughout the years, Sheril has taught numerous classes and quilting demonstrations and lectures. Her quilts have been shown at all the major shows and some smaller shows. She is a memberof KHQS, IQA, AQS as well as Quilters of the Bluegrass serving on their board in numerous positions.

NEW INTERNET CLASSES
What I am ready to offer is private workshops over the Internet.
For a class fee of $40.00 with a pattern included for each student, I will instruct you thru the process from beginning to end. All you need is a digital camera so we can track your progress.

After registering I will send you a full size pattern, which normally sells for $8.00 plus postage by regular mail, and when it arrives you simply e-mail me and I will go over the directions with you. Once you have collected the necessary materials I will talk you thru the process. As you proceed I will have you send me digital pictures, and help you decide if you are getting the right idea. I will continue to work with you until the project is completed, including the quilting and the binding as well as a sleeve on the back and a label. You can take a week or two, or months if you prefer. Like having a private tutor with you at all times!

This is another Butterfly I have added to my pattern line.
It's name is Franchesca.
The butterfly was made several months ago and I used it as a sample for the Stained Glass Applique class I teach. It was made on a bright red background. Hopefully, I will get all my samples made into quilts. The quilt is 41x43 and the price of the Butterfly plus the flower is $8.00 plus $l.35 for postage.

WHY??????

Last night I went to see Julia & Julia and afterwards I began to ask myself (WHY)
Just in case you haven't heard about the movie, it is about a young girl that starts a blog, and cooks her way thru Julia Childs cookbook she wrote while living in Paris. It is a split story flipping back and forth between the two women.

I guess we all need something that lends itself to our natural talents, and feels satisfying when it is concluded. But why do we continue to quilt even though we have more quilts than we can ever possibly show or sell?
When I get ready to start a new quilt, and I am going thru the process, trying to decide what to do next, I find it a very disconcerning time. I have no problem coming up with ideas but my problem is narrowing them down to one, or perhaps two ideas and then deciding which one I want to spend the next few weeks or months working on. Sometimes I don't sleep very well, and my mind is not always on the subject it should be on. I work very hard to get past this point because I know when I have finally decided which direction to go in, the excitement will finally set it! That is a great feeling!!! So, that is what I am striving for, that and the moment when I can show it finished to my piers. That sort of validates the time I spent putting it together.

So, where am I going with all this? Nowhere, I think I just wanted to get my thoughts down on paper and in doing that, sort out those feelings in my own mind. If along the way someone reads this and feels like I do, perhaps it can help to validate your feelings also.

Quilt Extravaganza

The best part about the reception was that my commission piece was on display in the window, and Dave and JoAnn Palmer brought Lovey, in person to meet everybody. She was so well behaved and just charmed everybody . It was so much fun to get to see the two of them together. This piece was made as a Christmas present for JoAnn.

It was a wonderful show this year, but I must end on a sad note, because someone stole three small pieces. These were small works of birds and sadly, two of Pat Jennings pieces were ones that were taken. The other one I don't know who it belonged to.

Berea Quilt Extravaganza

I had no more than returned from Knoxville and had to teach a workshop on Stained Glass Applique.

Then on Friday the 31st of July, the Quilt Extravaganza was held in Berea, Kentucky. There were lots of activities all over the town, and on that evening we had a reception for the artists.

I was very proud to see Paige Hoogerheide, who is a friend and former student had finished her lions. This quilt was made from a picture she actually took in Africa and she used the Stained Glass Applique technique.

Knoxville, Tennessee

Here is a picture of Eight Belles hanging in the Knoxville show last week. I had a really great time, and enjoyed seeing some of Knoxville for the very first time. This was the first time the quilt show was held in Knoxville , having been in Nashville for as long as I have been attending. For those of us from Lexington, Ky. it is a very easy trip of about 2hours 30 min. Parking was a bit of a problem, but we managed. We also visited the Art Museum, which was very nice. Truthfully, I wasn't overwhelmed by the winners, but there were plenty of venders and lots of fabric to buy.

Here is a butterfly that I posted some time ago, but it was not named at the time. This is a little pattern, only 11" by 7". none of the Butterfly patterns have been quilted yet, so you can imaging how wonderful they could be with thread work, or couching etc. Of course remember that they can be used as regular applique patterns also. The price is $4.50 plus $1.35 postage.

Mother's Love

I'm proud to announce my latest Stained Glass Applique quilt.

It is named Mother's Love and except for my guild ( which met last night) is the first time to be shown. There will be a pattern for it but will announce that when it is ready. I have a workshop shortly and I am busy getting ready for that.

I'm also ready to start working on a smaller version of Barbaro, and will announce that when it is ready.

This quilt was a joy to do and went so smoothly I could hardly believe it when I was finished.

Here is the 4th in the Butterfly series. She, ( I always think of butterflies as being feminine. She was done on bright blue solid fabric, and a lot of the pink and green is polka dots. She is 23"x 13" but of course she could be enlarged to whatever size you would want to work with. The price for the small butterflies is $4.50 plus $1.35 postage.

ARCH OF THE AGES

This is a quilt I made a couple of years ago, when I was just beginning to explore the idea of Stained Glass Applique. It is named Arch of The Ages. I'm submitting it to a show that will hang in the Museum in Paducah Kentucky. Not sure when. Anyway, I thought you might enjoy seeing an earlier work.

I also just got back from teaching a Stained Glass Applique workshop for KHQS which is our state organization that meets in June each year. I didn't take any pictures, but there were 10 students and they were all so enthusiac and energetic it was a pleasure working with them. I also sold my patterns for the first time, at first to the students, but after I showed my Flights of Fancy at show and tell I got requests from the rest of the crowd, and sold all I had plus took some orders. Especially the butterflies seemed to catch everybodies imagination. I was so pleased and surprised.

I guess it is just my time, because I also won a scholarship to attend a workshop with Jane Sassaman in September. I was really keeping my fingers crossed and could not believe my luck when I won. I have admired her work for many years and feel sure that I will get a lot out of her workshop.

Geese crossing

The other day on my way to the bank, I came across a family of geese, crossing the road. They had traffic stopped for about a block. I didn't have my camera with me, so I came back later in the day to take this picture. The father was in the lead with the little ones inbetween him and the mother. They were taking their own sweet time crossing the road. So, cute!!!!!

Well now that I'm back on the Artful Quilters list as Serindipity 2 , I have to find other things to write about in order to keep up my blog. Up until now I've pretty much kept it as a quilting blog, but the process I use takes some time, so I don't always have two new things a month to show. Perhaps it will stretch my imagination to come up with some new ideas.

First Butterfly pattern

This is a picture of my first Butterfly pattern by the name of Anastasia.
The size is 24" but I also made it in a 12"size. Each one is $4.50 plus postage of $1.35. A photo of the butterfly is included. This is the pattern I used in the Butterfly quilt. ( still unamed but I have had some great suggestions). This butterfly is not quilted, but in the actual quilt you will see I used feathers both inside the individual pieces and then on the black background.

KENTUCKY DERBY

For those of you who are Kentucky Derby fans, I thought I would show my Remembering Eight Belles quilt once again.
The Kentucky Derby is such an exciting event, but this year it had a tinge of sadness remembering the valient filly that gave her life for the race. This quilt is not made from a picture of Eight Belles, but rather it was my intention to catch the feeling of speed and determination I saw on her face as she crossed the finish line.

Also, the memorial statue to Barbaro was very touching. I haven't seen it in person yet, but hope in the next few months to take a trip to visit his grave site.

I know I promised to post a new Butterfly pattern shortly, and I am almost there! Keep checking in the next few days.

I am so excited to finish this quilt I haven't even named it yet. Perhaps you can make some suggestions!
Part of the reason I'm so excited is that it has sparked me to design more butterfly patterns. These patterns will be offered soon. There will be two sizes to choose from. One will be 24" and the other will be 12" Each pattern will cost $4.50 plus postage which is $1.25. These patterns can be made in my Stained Glass Applique technique, or simply applique. I have two more sample patterns made, other than the above , and what I plan on doing is to offer another one every couple of weeks or so, I guess until I run out of ideas, or just get tired of making them.
